Grand Ole Opry Cancels Saturday Night Performance as Ticketed Event Due to Winter Storm Fern, Will Continue as Live Radio Show
With Nashville forecasted to be very much in the path of Winter Storm Fern, the Grand Ole Opry has canceled its January 24 Saturday night performance as a ticketed event. The Opry will continue as a live radio show Saturday evening at 7 p.m. on WSM Radio and Opry and WSM websites. The show will also be heard beginning one hour later on SiriusXM, Willie’s Roadhouse. The historic Opry broadcast will feature both live performances and recorded highlights from past Opry shows.
The Opry began as a radio show exclusively in 1925 and is marking 100 years on the air. The show has been heard by legions of fans every Saturday night for decades, with Saturday night show cancellations being extremely rare. In 1945, the regular Saturday night broadcast went silent for an evening following the death of President Franklin D Roosevelt, but a brief live Opry performance played on for patrons. In 1968 following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the night’s ticketed show was cancelled due to a city-wide Nashville curfew, but a previous Opry broadcast was played over the WSM airwaves. In 2020, ticketed Opry performances were cancelled for more than six months during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Opry played on via radio and livestream for millions of fans each Saturday night and featured artists including Garth Brooks, Luke Combs, Vince Gill, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker, Ricky Skaggs, Connie Smith, Marty Stuart, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Steve Wariner, Trisha Yearwood, and more.
“History is made with every Opry broadcast, and Saturday night’s show will be no exception,” said Opry Executive Producer Dan Rogers. “I’d be lying if I said we knew exactly what was going to happen throughout the show tomorrow night, but with so many fans and friends in Fern’s path, we invite everyone to stay home and safe, to put another log on the fire, and to tune in with us and weather the storm together accompanied by great country music.”
Refunds for Saturday night’s ticketed performance are available at the original point of purchase. If fans purchased tickets via AXS online or by phone, a refund will automatically be issued to the credit card they used to purchase within 30 business days.
Tonight’s (Friday) show will continue as planned. Upcoming Opry shows are set to include performances by Trace Adkins, Ashley McBryde, Lorrie Morgan, The Oak Ridge Boys, Carly Pearce, Blake Shelton, Ricky Skaggs, Keith Urban, and more.
