Celebrating Charley Pride
On September 22, we’re paying tribute to barrier-breaking country superstar, Charley Pride. Taking the stage in his honor are Opry members Darius Rucker and Pam Tillis, Neal McCoy, The War and Treaty, The Malpass Brothers, Tony Jackson, and Charley’s son, Dion Pride.
Charley’s love for music began early, singing along to the Grand Ole Opry over the radio. At 16, he left home to pursue a career in baseball, pitching in the Negro American League. But music ultimately called him home.
After moving to Nashville and recording a demo, Charley signed with RCA Records. His first single, “Just Between You and Me,” became a hit in 1966, launching a career that would make him country music’s first Black superstar and earn him dozens of chart-topping hits.
Charley made his Opry debut in 1968 and officially became a beloved member of the Opry family in 1993. For more than 50 years, he brought his signature voice and warm personality to the Opry stage, setting a powerful example of what was possible in country music.
Charley’s story is one of extraordinary talent, determination and firsts. He earned three GRAMMY Awards, became the first Black recipient of the CMA Entertainer of the Year award and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. And while the accolades tell part of his story, the people who knew and worked alongside him can tell you what made Charley truly special.
