Monte Warden
Artist Information
Monte Warden is a multi-million-selling songwriter and two-time inductee into the Texas Music Hall of Fame, honored both as a solo artist and as a founding member of The Wagoneers. Across four decades, his work has helped shape the sound and direction of Texas music, from honky-tonk and rockabilly to Americana and traditional pop.
Warden’s career began in Austin while still a teenager. His first band, Whoa! Trigger, won Best New Band at the 1983 Austin Music Awards, setting the stage for the formation of The Wagoneers. As frontman and primary songwriter, Warden led the band to national attention, earning a reputation as one of the most influential country acts of the 1980s. Chet Flippo famously called them “the greatest honky-tonk band that ever was,” and after performing at the first SXSW, The Wagoneers became the festival’s first act to sign a major-label deal, signing with A&M Records. Their debut album, Stout and High, was released to universal critical acclaim and is now regarded as one of the most important country records of its era.
Following The Wagoneers’ initial run, Warden launched a solo career that continued to draw critical praise. His 1994 self-titled album was named one of the 100 Best U.S. Albums of the 20th Century by NME. Over the years, he released records with RCA, Watermelon, and Asylum/Warner Records, performed on Austin City Limits TV multiple times, Hee Haw, as well as over a dozen appearances on the Grand Ole Opry.
Beginning in the early 2000s, Warden found his greatest commercial success as a songwriter. Writing for Moonkiss Music, he earned multi-million-selling cuts, charted singles across five Billboard charts, and placements in major film and television projects. His songs have been recorded by artists including George Strait, Josh Turner, George Jones, Patty Loveless, Asleep At The Wheel, Kelly Willis, and Travis Tritt. Warden co-wrote Strait’s smash-hit “Desperately,” which earned a BMI Radio Award and, in 2007, the coveted BMI Million-Air Award for surpassing one million radio performances.
In 2017, Warden introduced a new creative chapter with Monte Warden and The Dangerous Few, an all-original Americana project rooted in jazz and traditional pop. The band’s self-released albums received universal critical acclaim, Billboard chart placements, first-ballot Grammy consideration, and the strongest reviews of Warden’s career. Paste Magazine wrote, “Warden has created a sound that never before existed,” with critics frequently comparing the songwriting partnership of Warden and his wife Brandi to Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Johnny Mercer, and Leiber & Stoller.
In 2026, Warden announced The Wagoneers would be releasing new music for the first time since 1989. The release of the singles “Doghouse Flowers” and “Yesterday Stopped By” marks a significant moment in his career, reconnecting one of Texas music’s most influential bands with a present-day audience. The new recordings reflect the band’s original spirit while showcasing decades of experience, reaffirming The Wagoneers’ place in the American music canon. The success of the singles hastened The Wagoneers return to both The Grand Ole Opry and the national charts.
A seventh-generation Texan, devoted husband, and father, Monte Warden’s career is defined by longevity, innovation, and a continued commitment to making music that matters.
