Jimmy Webb
Artist Information
Jimmy Webb is an American songwriter, composer and performer known worldwide as a master of his trade. Since his first platinum record, “The Worst That Could Happen,” Webb has had numerous hits including “Up, Up and Away,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” “Highwayman,” “All I Know,” “Didn’t We” and “MacArthur Park.” This fall, Webb opens another chapter with Yours For The Taking: The Found Songs of Jimmy Webb, out October 23 via Sun Records. The album brings together twelve previously unreleased songs written from the 1980s through the early 2000s, compositions that remained tucked away for decades before Webb and longtime producer Fred Mollin returned to them. Written by younger versions of Webb but recorded by the artist he is today, the collection offers a rare conversation between different eras of one songwriter’s life. Following the release of the new album, PBS will celebrate Webb’s singular career with Jimmy Webb: American Songwriter, premiering October 30 as part of Great Performances.
Among his many honors, Webb has received the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s prestigious Johnny Mercer Award and was its youngest-ever inductee for decades. He is also a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame, and has received the Academy of Country Music’s Poet’s Award and an Ivor Novello Award. His influence extends across generations, genres and musical traditions, making him one of the rare songwriters whose work is both unmistakably of its time and continually new.
