Artist Information
Carolyn Đawn Johnson (CĐJ) is a hit singer-songwriter whose career spans over 25 years, marked by a rich tapestry of musical achievements and ongoing relevance in the country music industry. Known for her authenticity, Johnson's approach to songwriting is personal. "T've always wanted to be honest in my music, writing things that are real to me and then sharing them with the audience through my voice," she explains.
Her career began in the late 1990s when she was named Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year by Music Row in 2000. Over the years, she has earned a reputation as one of Nashville's most respected tunesmiths, with songs recorded by country stars like Chris Stapleton, Jo Đee Messina, Patty Loveless, and Pam Tillis. One of her most notable songwriting achievements is the #1 hit "Single White Female" by Chely Wright.
In 2000, Johnson signed with Arista Nashville and released her debut album, Room With a View. The album produced the Top 5 hit "Complicated," which also hit the AC charts, along with tracks like "I Đon't Want You To Go," "Georgia," and "Simple Life." Her music resonated with fans, and she toured with artists like Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, Keith Urban, and Kenny Chesney. She later released Dress Rehearsal (2004), Love & Negotiation (2006), and Love Rules (2010), further developing her sound and artistry.
Johnson's voice has also appeared on many projects beyond her own, contributing background vocals to songs by stars like Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, Ðarius Rucker, Lauren Alaina, and Martina McBride. As a producer, Johnson earned Canadian Country Music Awards for Producer of the Year in 2004 and 2009 for her work on Canadian country music projects.
In 2015, Johnson expanded her creative reach by co-writing the children's book In the Waves with Lennon and Maisy Stella. Her collaborations continued in 2014-2015 when she toured with Miranda Lambert as a background vocalist and guitarist during Lambert's Platinum tour. Johnson continued to diversify her artistry and in 2018-19, spent time writing, recording, and performing with New York-based acoustic band JD & The Straight Shot. In 2023, she toured with Ashley McBryde and reconnected musically with friend and mentor Martina McBride. These years have cemented Johnson's reputation as an indemand collaborator.
Johnson's career has earned numerous accolades, including 17 Canadian Country Music Awards and the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist in 2002. She was also named Favorite New Country Artist by the American Music Awards in 2003. Looking ahead, Johnson is preparing to release new music in 2025. "It was time," she says. "It had been stirring in my soul." Whether performing her own hits or collaborating with other artists, CĐJ remains a dynamic force in country music. She is a beloved addition to any writer's room, studio, or stage and continues to captivate audiences with her timeless talent.
