Chris Young is well-known for hits like "Losing Sleep" and "Lonely Eyes," but before becoming a big-time name in country music, he was growing up right outside of Nashville in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. We traveled back to Chris' hometown this week to trace his musical journey to becoming an Opry member.

We’re Heading back to Tennessee...

We've been in Oklahoma for the past few weeks to visit some of our Opry members' hometowns —  but we're back in Tennessee this week!

Opry member Chris Young was raised nearby in Murfreesboro, TN. We’re in his hometown today to trace his musical journey to becoming an Opry member!

Chris was raised in Murfreesboro, Tennessee —  only about 34 miles outside of Nashville.

Chris showed an interest in music from an early age. While attending Oakland High School, he sang in his high school choir and began playing local gigs.

While he was a student at Oakland High School, he sang in his high school choir and began playing local gigs around town.

 

 

He spent a few semesters at Belmont University and at MTSU in his hometown before heading off to Arlington, TX to front the house band at Cowboys Dancehall.

A Big Chapter

Chris spent several semesters at Belmont University in Nashville and then at Middle Tennessee State University back in his hometown of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

He then headed off to Arlington, Texas where he fronted the house band at Cowboys Dancehall. He later auditioned for Nashville Star in Houston and won the show in 2006.

A Memorable Debut

June 15th will always be a special date for Chris —  it was the night he made his Grand Ole Opry debut in 2006.

 

On August 29, 2017, Vince Gill invited Chris to be our newest member! Chris was officially inducted on October 17, 2017!

 

Starting a New Tradition

August 29, 2017 was a memorable night for Chris as Vince Gill invited him to become the next member of the Opry.

His induction took place on October 17, 2017, and he's been a treasured member of our Opry family ever since.
