This past Friday night, pop icon Barry Gibb made his Grand Ole Opry debut alongside good friend Ricky Skaggs. At the end of Skaggs’ introduction, Gibb walked on stage and was greeted by thunderous applause. Skaggs commented to Gibb, “You’ve played all over the world,” and Gibb quickly replied, “Yes, but this is the center of the world – center of the universe musically, and I couldn’t be prouder. And I’m standing in the circle,” referencing the famed circle of oak wood where so many legends have stood and played.
The first selection Gibb and Skaggs performed for the Opry crowd was an old Civil War song, “When The Roses Bloom Again.” Gibb followed it by pleasing the audience with two Bee Gees classic hits, “To Love Somebody,” and “How Do You Mend A Broken Heart,” with Skaggs joining him on choruses. Gibb and Skaggs became fast friends the last few months as they worked together on Skaggs’ upcoming album, titled Music To My Ears, scheduled to release on Sept. 25.
Among other performers scheduled for upcoming Opry shows are Carrie Underwood (Aug. 4); The Band Perry, Vince Gill (Aug. 7); Keith Urban, Ray Price (Aug. 11); Eric Church (Aug. 14); Rascal Flatts (Aug. 21); Josh Turner, Chris Young (Aug. 28).
