Photos From The Opry House

A blog by Opry staffers, Opry members, friends, and others about the flooding of the Opry House, subsequent clean up and refurbishment, and an eventual return home for the show that made country music famous.

“Time is a great healer,” says the much-quoted Italian proverb. In the case of the Grand Ole Opry House, the great healer/cleaner/refurbisher is a virtual army of professionals working almost non-stop with hammers, vacuums, saws, and other tools to ready the Opry House for the moment when country music’s top artists and biggest fans gather to see the Opry staged in its permanent home once again.

While photos of the House taken during last month’s flood spurred emails from around the world noting fans were heartbroken by what they saw, the shots accompanying this blog show a House no doubt on the mend. The pews on the main floor of the auditorium have been removed, as has the stage, such that both can be replaced. We’ve been assured that the iconic circle of wood placed center stage in 1974 is being treated with tender loving care in anticipation of its return. Walls that once divided dressing rooms inside country’s home have been removed such that new ones can take their place.

When the Opry House was under water on Tues., May 4 and the show moved to the War Memorial Auditorium for the evening, Marty Stuart opened the show, saying, “our family, our songs, and our spirit live on.” Looking at the photos from this week, it’s not terribly difficult to imagine that family, those songs, and that spirit once again inhabiting the walls of the Grand Ole Opry House in the not-too-distant future.

Until then, please allow me to once again remind you we’d love to see you in Nashville during this historic Opry summer. The city is alive with more music than you can possible experience in the days in which you’ll visit. In the past week alone, I’ve seen performances by two of my very favorite artists– Mary Chapin Carpenter and Vince Gill–, and within then next couple of weeks, I’ll have the chance to see performances by Carrie Underwood, Josh Turner, The Oak Ridge Boys, Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, Wynonna, Emmylou Harris, and more.

I couldn’t be happier to live in Nashville this summer, and I swear you’ll leave us feeling you couldn’t be happier you visited.

We were there last year and it sickened me to see all that you went through! So sad. But the cleanup pics look good!

I worked at Gaylord Entertainment for 10 years – and the flood of 1975 was not as bad as this one (saw pictures)- But country music people and entertainment are definitely a family, in Nashville and they never give up. they just Keep on Keeping On.

I just saw the pictures of the refurbishing of the Grand Ole Opry House. It is so sad that it was under
water for several days and the damage it has done. I’m sure it will look beautiful when completed,
and hopefully, the “circle” can be refinished and put back in the middle of the stage. We have been
there many times to see performances and to take tours backstage. Our favorit performer is Vince
Gill and we have seen him at many venues……..most recently, Dayton, OH. Look forward to our next
visit, hopefully before Christmas! Good luck with the refurbishing…

I was just there in October of 2009 and it brought tears to my eyes to see Nashville and Tennesse to be in such a devistating state. I know you will get back up on your feet though because everyone in country music all pulls together to get the job done. That is one reason I like country music so much is how everyone seems to be one big family. The clean-up is looking great keep up the great job. I cant wait to come back sometime to see what you have all acommplished. Good Luck with the clean up!

I have been listening to the Grand Ole Opry for over 50 years and come to see it in person at least once a year. This year I already have my front row tickets for the 7:00 pm show on July 24 which I notice will be in the Ryman Auditorium since the flood. I am looking forward to seeing it and one of my sisters who will be with me hasn’t seen the Opry at the Ryman. I was so saddened to see the pictures of the flood but am so gladdened to see the restoration work in progress and can’t wait to see the Opry in the Opry House again. It’s good to see that all of Nashville is helping themselves get things back to normal instead of sitting and waiting on someone else to do it for them. That’s really the American spirit!

  6. THE PROGRESS IS LOOKING GOOD AFTER ALL THE WATER DAMAGE. WE WERE THEY JUST A FEW DAYS BEFORE THAT. WE WENT TO THE RYMAN THAT TIME BUT WE CAME LAST YEAR TO THE OLE GRAND OPLY WHERE ALL THE DAMAGE WAS. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL THERE SO KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND IT WILL LOOK THE SAME WAY BUT BETTER. ALL THE PEOPLE PULLED TOGETHER TO HELP AND IT WILL BE BACK THE SAME .

  7. Myla Thomas says:

Dan; well put! The music is the city and the city is Nashville! Never before have I seen so many artists “in town” and putting on fantastic shows. The weekly line ups for the Opry are just amazing, and you all have done a wonderful job promoting this. Keep up the good work! Our Opry will be back better than ever. Hope to see you and the staff soon!

I took the tour in 2004 and loved it. I am curious. did the circle on stage taken form the Rhyman and the painting in the back done by Archie Campbell survive?

  18. Great article. I think ‘views’ are the future when it comes to youtube. if you dont have views, why make a video about your company. I seen many companies have a youtube video with like 100 views. Whats up with that?

I have observed that over the course of making a relationship with real estate entrepreneurs, you’ll be able to come to understand that, in every real estate contract, a payment is paid. All things considered, FSBO sellers don’t “save” the percentage. Rather, they try to earn the commission through doing a good agent’s task. In the process, they spend their money and also time to execute, as best they might, the assignments of an real estate agent. Those responsibilities include exposing the home by means of marketing, offering the home to buyers, constructing a sense of buyer urgency in order to make prompt an offer, scheduling home inspections, handling qualification investigations with the lender, supervising maintenance, and aiding the closing.
