Toby Keith, Garth Brooks rock more than 60,000 for tornado relief
They sure do like their football at Oklahoma University, but Toby Keith, Garth Brooks and some others broke the attendance record Saturday (July 6) at the school’s Gaylord Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla., USA Today reported. More than 60,000 country fans gathered for a tornado relief concert with Toby, Garth, Ronnie Dunn, Willie Nelson and Carrie Underwood – via satellite from Nashville’s Opry stage – as the headliners.
Legendary football coach Barry Switzer and the governor of Oklahoma, Mary Fallin, also made appearances. “We may have had setbacks here, but we will have a really strong Oklahoma comeback!” the guv declared from stage.
The stars riled up the crowd by appealing to Okie pride, but it was a tough day for Garth, who graduated from rival Oklahoma State University. “It is fantastically hard for me to play here,” Garth joked. “I’ve never played in Norman.” Still, Garth managed to get the crowd to sing every word to hits “Rodeo,” “Two of a Kind” and “Papa Loved Mama.” After turning the stage over to his wife, Trisha Yearwood, Garth finished with “Calling Baton Rouge,” “The Thunder Rolls,” “Friends in Low Places” and “The Dance.”
Toby closed the night with a set that included monster hits “Made in America” and “Red Solo Cup,” ending on a serious note with the ballad “American Soldier.”
The encore? About 10 minutes of fireworks.
All the money’s going to United Way of Central Oklahoma’s May Tornadoes Relief Fund.
Jake Owen krashes go-kart, ends up in emergency room
“What a way to end the weekend,” Jake Owen posted on his Twitter page along with a pic of himself in a neck brace late Sunday night (July 7).
So what happened this time? Let’s let Jake explain.
— Jake Owen (@jakeowen) July 8, 2013
Good plan. The weekend started with some good news. Jake was psyched that his dad, Steve – who is battling cancer – had emerged from radiation treatments “looking good and feelin’ good.” And that’s good news indeed.
Miranda Lambert can’t get enough of that Beyonce
In fact, Miranda Lambert just saw Beyonce in concert – for the fourth time! The latest – Beyonce played Dallas Saturday night (July 6). Miranda’s review, via Twitter: “Amazing! Inspiring! Flawless!”
Gotta love when even the stars get starstruck.
And Miranda’s not afraid to defend her woman, either. Remember when Beyonce got all that grief for lip-syncing during the inauguration for President Obama’s second term? “It’s Beyonce. She can do whatever the hell she wants!” Miranda roared to reporters afterward.
