The Whippoorwill
Atlanta, Georgia’s Blackberry Smoke are back with their third studio album titled, The Whippoorwill.
This album is the debut project for Zac Brown’s Southern Ground record label, and was released this week with great reviews. The Whippoorwill effortlessly blends influences from Southern rock to classic country to showcase the band’s notoriously tight musicianship that listeners have come to love. It includes the perfect balance of heartfelt ballads, such as “One Horse Town,” and “Up The Road,” and up-tempo rockers anthems like “Six Ways To Sunday,” and “Leave A Scar.”
Lead singer Charlie Starr is a country singer with a rock attitude and heart, who says that people call Blackberry Smoke a southern rock band, but their sound is really a blend of country, rock, and bluegrass – “southern music.” “Our main influences might not just be Marshall Tucker, the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Williams, Bill Monroe – it runs the gamut for us – it’s just all kinds of stuff,” Charlie explains. “It’s not about what kind of music it is, as long as it’s good and it’s honest,” he adds. “It’s just southern music…That’s what makes us happy at the end of the day.”
Charlie is confident that the group has crafted their best set of songs yet for this album, and it does a great job of encompassing what southern music really is. “So, let’s look at this album and be like, ‘Man, there are a lot of different songs on here, and that’s cool.’ The common thread that pulls them together being the south influence,” explains Charlie.
When asked which song he would pick from The Whippoorwill to release to radio, Charlie admits: “I don’t know that we would even know how to go about trying to second guess what people might prefer on radio, whether it be a more rocking kind of song or a laid-back country type of song, or a back-porch bluesy kind of song.” This album has a little something for all southern music enthusiasts.
