Opry.com’s Guide To What’s New In Country.
While this week Stephen Barker Liles and Eric Gunderson may be celebrating the release of their second album, this self-titled record might as well be their first. Love and Theft, a pop-country trio, found their way to Nashville several years ago with a unique sound. At the time Eric, Stephen, and former member Brian Bandas took turns signing lead while the other two sang backing harmonies. It’s been three years since the release of their debut album and things are a bit different now days. Love and Theft is now a duo, successfully holding on to those church choir harmonies and country melodies fans fell in love with, with a more organic sound.
“We feel like people will be hearing us for the first time,” says Eric. “Stephen and I have always been on the same page as far as the vision for the band, and we feel like we have made the record we’ve always wanted to make.” The two guys have a passion for performing live and they chose to integrate that into recording of Love and Theft. The tracks were all cut with a live band in studio. “You get the warmth and the emotion of the players vibing together in the room,” says Eric of the back-to-basics approach. “There are some things you just can’t do in a little room on a laptop.”
The 11 cuts on this album cover everything from a solid sing-along chorus in “Girls Like To Shake It” to a heart-wrenching ballad in “Town Drunk”. The guys tackled the subject of love a bit differently in several tracks; “Thinking of You (And Me) explores the gray area in a guy-girl friendship, “Amen” a song with a sultry groove, and “If You Ever Get Lonely” is promise to always be there for a lost-love. And don’t forget about “Angel Eyes”, the lead single sitting firmly in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.
