When it comes to the Grand Ole Opry and country music, the Q & A Lady is the first to admit she hasn’t seen and done it all. She’s equally quick, however, to add that she’s been lucky to see and do quite a little bit, and she’s happy to share her country insight with readers each week. She knows her Con Hunley from her John Conlee and her “Your Cheatin’ Heart” from her “Achy Breaky Heart.” If you have a question about country music you’d like to submit for her to consider answering, you’re welcome to do so here. Or you can just drop by each week to read her responses to other inquiries from across the country and around the globe. You just might learn a fun fact or two along the way.

Who was the oldest performer ever to perform on the Grand Ole Opry? Gov. Jimmie Davis, Wade Mainer, or somebody else?
James Simpson
Hillsboro, MO

Dear James,
While I’m not absolutely sure he was the oldest person ever to play the Opry, I can say that I‘ll never forget the night in May 2000 that 100-year-old Bob Douglas and 12-year-old Luke Bulla performed together on a fiddle tune. It was a sweet sight and a testament to the inspirational nature of the Opry that two people divided in age by 88 years could share the same dream of playing the Opry and could share together their dreams coming true. I claim not to be a softy, James, but I was glad I had a handkerchief in my clutch that night. I keep one around for moments like that, for Steve Hartman stories on CBS News, and for those “come from behind” and “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” stories that air before the big games on ESPN. They tear me apart, James. Oh, yes, and also for the times when Don Williams’ “If Hollywood Don’t Need You” comes on 650 WSM.
Thanks for asking,
The Q & A Lady
