Angie Johnson enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 19 and served one active duty term as an intelligence analyst before her career coincided with her passion for music, when she joined the Air Force Musicians Troop. Her military musical career started with a group of entertainers called Tops In Blue, who traveled to bases around the world for a year putting on shows for other troops. She soon left intelligence and became a full time vocalist in The Air Force Band. Eventually, she separated from active duty to pursue a musical career in Nashville, Tennessee, but kept her military ties by serving one weekend a month in the Air National Guard as a band vocalist.
A year after toiling in the music business singing in bars and being heartbroken repeatedly by several “big breaks” that never came through, she enrolled as a full time student at Columbia State in Franklin, Tennessee. She stopped writing song, recording and performing all together, and was ready to dedicate the next eight years of her life to getting her doctorate in Psychology.
On August 8th, 2011, deployed on her seventh tour in the Middle East performing for troops, an audience member from a small acoustic show took a video of Angie performing Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” and posted the performance on YouTube. The video went viral, gaining over two million hits, and was featured on radio stations, talk shows, and websites nationwide including PerezHilton.com, RyanSeacrest.com and Good Morning America. When T.V. host/Veejay Carson Daly saw the video, he went on a worldwide search trying to find out who Angie was through Twitter. She responded to his tweet and he invited her to audition for the NBC reality talent competition called The Voice.
Angie became a contestant on the second season of The Voice as part of Team Cee Lo, after singing Pat Benatar’s “Heartbreaker” during the blind auditions. During the first week of battle rounds, Angie competed against another contestant singing “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler and was eliminated. She is now back in Nashville, and following her newly revived musical dreams.
