The Civil Wars

Guest Artist

The Civil Wars, the duo consisting of California native Joy Williams and Alabama born John Paul White, have taken the music world by storm since the two met at a Nashville songwriting session in 2008. Quickly releasing a live album of what was only their second show together, the resulting Live At Eddie’s Attic introduced the band to the hundreds of thousands who have since downloaded it free off their website. Soon after, the title song of their four song EP, Poison & Wine, was featured on hit TV show Grey’s Anatomy.

Their 2011 debut album, Barton Hollow, proved that the excitement surrounding the duo was no fluke and their close-knit harmonies and haunting melodies have caught people’s attention. “It's the strangest thing when I sing with her," says John Paul. "Even the things we do with vibrato, typically, they're the same – we speed up and slow down at the same pace. She'll ad-lib something live, and the next time around, I'll sing the harmony to it. But if I sat and thought about it, I couldn't do it."

Since the album’s release, the group has been on tour with Adele, performed at the 54th Grammy Awards, and won two Grammy Awards, one for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and the other for Best Folk Album. They have also contributed songs to the soundtrack for The Hunger Games, including their duet with Taylor Swift, "Safe & Sound."
